Famously called the “fruit of the angels” by Christopher Columbus, this deliciously sweet and soft, buttery fleshed fruit has a musky undertone.

Nutritional value: Papaya is rich in fibres, Vitamins C and E, and antioxidants that prevent cholesterol levels. Being a very low calorie fruit, it initiates good bowel movement and thus helps in weight loss. It’s a great immune-booster: a single papaya contains more than 200% of your daily Vitamin C requirement. It prevents cardio-vascular diseases and arthritis, improves vision, eases menstrual pain, slows ageing and is an excellent food option for diabetics.

How to consume: Since it tastes best while cold, you can eat the cut fruit as breakfast with yoghurt or in salads with other fruits and an olive oil-vinegar dressing. Mixing with coconut milk and ice makes it a great smoothie. Papaya is often used to make halwas, chutneys, pachadi; and even to tenderize meat for kababs and other gosht curries.

How to store: You can leave an unripe papaya in room temperature (20-25 °C) a few days to ripen it. Storing it in a paper bag, preferably with a banana often fastens the ripening process. A ripe papaya can be frozen either as a whole or cut pieces in airtight containers in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
